  Conformation Shows
What is a Champion?
Any purebred dog, registered with the Canadian Kennel Club which has won at least 10 points accumulated under at least three different judges at Championship shows.  A maximum of five points can be accumulated per show.
What does Conformation mean?
Breed clubs describe the characteristics of the "perfect" dog in their breed.  These Breed Standards are then approved by the Canadian Kennel Club.

At Championship shows, dogs are measured against their breed standard to see how good a specimen - or how close to "perfect" they are in the judges opinion.
Breed Judging
With each breed, there are five classes; Junior Puppy, Senior Puppy, Canadian Bred, Bred By Exhibitor and Open.  Male dogs are judged against each other first before bitches (female dogs) are judged, also against each other first.

All dogs entered in one class are judged and 1st - 4th place ribbons are awarded.  Then the next class is done until all classes are done.

The first place winners of each class of Dogs (males) are then judged against each other to find the best (Winners) and second best (Reserve) dog.  The Bitches (females) are then judged using the same process.  It is at this level that the Winners receive their points according to the number of dogs in their own sex that they defeated.

Along with the Winners Dog (male) and Winners Bitch (female), the Specials (Champions) are judged to select the Best of Breed.  From these dogs, the Judge will also select the Best of Opposite Sex, the Best of Winners and the Best Puppy in the breed.  The Winners Dog and Winners Bitch may earn additional points at this level.

This process is repeated for each breed in each group.  As there are 7 groups, this is a lengthy process so judging will occur in many rings at the same time.
Group Judging
When all breeds in a group have been judged, the Best of Breed from each breed in that group is called to the ring for
group judging.

The Judge chooses the dog felt to be the best example of its breed.  He/she will also select the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placers and choose the Best Puppy in Group.
Best in Show
At the next (and final) level, the seven Best in Group winners are judged against each other to choose the Best in Show, the one dog felt to be the best example of its breed at that show.  The Best Puppy in Show is also selected at that time.

There may also be extra unofficial classes such as Brace (two matched dogs shows as a pair on a single lead) or Miscellaneous Class (unusual or rare breeds).
